3D printing technologies continue to gain traction in total talus replacement, particularly as research demonstrates it’s an effective surgical option for patients with avascular necrosis. SmartTRAK highlights three recent studies illustrating how custom 3D printed metal implants are being used in total talus replacement surgery to restore normal joint anatomy and maintain joint range of motion.
SmartTRAK will be attending the 2021 American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Meeting in Charlotte, NC, Sept 22-25, to learn more about this technology and other advancements in foot & ankle treatment. 1) Three Dimension Printing Talar Prostheses for Total Replacement in Talar Necrosis and Collapse
-
- SmartTRAK Analyst Summary:
- A retrospective study evaluated anatomical talar replacement & clinical results of 9 patients w/ talar necrosis & collapse (TNC) using 3D printed metal talus implants and reported talar height increased 6.97mm & AOFAS hindfoot score improved 53.34mm at mean follow-up of 23.17 months. Int Orthop
- Conclusion:
- The study concludes "The 3D printing patient-specific total talar prostheses allowed anatomical reconstruction in TNC. This novel treatment with 3D-printed prostheses could serve as a reliable patient-specific alternative in TNC.”
2) 3D Printed Total Talus Replacement for Avascular Necrosis of the Talus
-
- SmartTRAK Analyst Summary:
- A retrospective study reviewed 27 patients who underwent TTR for talar AVN with a custom 3D printed metal implant & reported VAS pain scores improved from 7.1 to 3.9 and ankle range of motion remained unchanged postoperatively at a mean follow-up of 22.2 months. Foot Ankle Int
- Conclusion:
- The study concludes that “3D printed TTRs represent a unique surgical option for patients with severe talar AVN. Patients in this cohort demonstrated significant improvements in pain scores and patient-reported outcomes. TTR allows for symptomatic improvement with the preservation of motion in individuals with talar collapse and AVN.”
3) Custom 3D-Printed Total Talar Prostheses Restore Normal Joint Anatomy Throughout the Hindfoot
-
- SmartTRAK Analyst Summary:
- A retrospective study of 14 patients undergoing total talar prosthesis implantation for the treatment of talar avascular necrosis reported talar height was significantly increased with use of TTP. Foot Ankle Spec
- Conclusion:
- The study concludes “As a proof of concept, 3D-printed TTP was successful in restoring talar height and talar tilt in the setting of AVN. Additionally, the procedure maintained normal alignment in nonpathological joints. TTPs, based on our cohort, are a viable option to restore more normal anatomical alignment.”
