Nurses, doctors and industry descended on a beachfront resort in Hollywood, FL, from September 7 through 10, for educational sessions and hands-on learning in foundational wound care at Wild on Wounds 2022 (WoW). WoW, as its fun name suggests, is designed for those clinicians focused on, and desiring foundational knowledge in skin and wound care. In reflecting on this focus, SmartTRAK noted conference buzz and product innovation at this year’s WoW centered on the use of advanced wound dressings and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) over other conferences that include more biologics.
SmartTRAK will also be attending the upcoming SAWC Fall conference, covering everything new, exciting and important from the event. Our experts are ready to answer your questions, share insights on the latest in the wound market and discuss how we can help you Be the Expert in your market! Kicking off WoW, clinician presenters highlighted many “buzz” worthy products and what differentiates them across numerous SmartTRAK-covered product categories. For instance:
In the electronic health record (EHR) and wound imaging space, the presenters highlighted WoundZoom* from Perceptive Solutions* for its newly released functionality, iTreatMD’s* intuitive interface and detailed analytics and ability to optimize reimbursable activities, and eKare’s* inSight 3D wound measurement app for its in workflow capabilities.
In addition to the organizer’s buzz-worthy products, SmartTRAK observed research presented at the meeting shows Companies are evaluating novel approaches to product combinations in both advanced dressings, NPWT and clinical decision support tools.
SmartTRAK identified two 3M* preclinical posters (posters #5 and 13) comparing a 7-day use “novel peel and place NPWT dressing” versus a traditional V.A.C. Therapy reticulated open cell foam (ROCF) dressing. In talking with conference attendees, we understood the “novel” dressing to likely be a Prevena* single-use dressing being attached to the V.A.C. system. The benefits of attaching the Prevena dressing is longer wear time resulting in fewer dressing changes and less tissue ingrowth of traditional ROCF dressings. Both studies concluded the “novel” dressing resulted in improved granulation tissue formation and less tissue ingrowth.
Hartmann supported a case series (poster #34) evaluating the combined use of Covalon’s* ColActive Plus Ag Powder* (Hartmann as US distributor) and Zetuvit Plus Silicone Border* in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and venous leg ulcers (VLUs). The goal is to determine whether combining these products results in improved management of wound exudate. The case series demonstrated the product combination’s superabsorbent and antimicrobial properties healed all wounds within twelve weeks.
Finally, SmartTRAK observed a poster (#16) highlighting the benefits of competency development and clinical decision support by WoundReference. Noted wound care expert and poster author, Catherine Milne, MSN, APRN, CWOCN, shared with SmartTRAK that this tool is differentiated from those developed by medical device companies because it is device and company agnostic. Specifically, WoundReference provides expert clinician-developed educational content, treatment algorithms and the ability to seek out consultations with other wound care experts.
