New Products:

  • Cardinal Health* 

    Cardinal Health announced the launch of the first surgical incise drape using Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG). The drape features Avery Dennison's patented BeneHold CHG adhesive technology, which helps reduce the risk of surgical site contamination w/ organisms associated w/ SSIs.

  • Coloplast is gradually launching Alprep Pad in select markets. Now available in the UK, Australia and New Zeeland. Alprep Pad is a foam for mechanical cleansing and debridement of wounds.

  • SmartTRAK noted the launch of the ’Simply Wound Management’ application from Hartmann Group in WUWHS 2022. The Middle East is one of the 2 regions where the company is pioneering the application for healthcare professionals.

  • 3M*

    3M/KCI’s US Patent Application “Foam Wound Inserts With Regions Of Higher And Lower Densities, Wound Dressings, And Methods" was published. The invention relates to foam for NPWT and instillation. 20220096277

  • NPWT Wound Drain

    The US Patent Application “WOUND DRAIN" has been published. The wound drain includes structural components that prevent the drain from collapsing under negative pressure and from ingesting foreign materials introduced into a wound cavity. 20220096728

  • Baxter International’s US Patent Application “AUTOMATICALLY IDENTIFYING PRESSURE INJURIES" was published. The invention relates to various systems, devices and methods for predicting and identifying root causes of pressure injuries in a clinical environment. 20220095999

Studies:

  • Growth Factors for Treatment of Burns
    Systematic review found between low and moderate evidence for recommendation of the use of topical fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) to accelerate healing of burns. Further rigorous trials are needed. Burns

  • Smith & Nephew*
    SNN announced a publication comparing Grafix to other skin substitutes (CTPs) in pts w/ DFUs. The analysis of 7,849 outpatient claims between 2013-2017 found a significant reduction in ulcer recurrence (36.7% reduction at 30 days and 58.5% at 365 days) w/ Grafix. Adv Wound Care

  • Grafted Adipose Cells Reduce Capsular Contracture
    Bioeng Transl Med published results from an evaluation of adipose-derived stem cells grafted onto silicone implants in a murine model. The authors reported the treatment group had reduced capsular contracture.

Deals/Financing:

  • MiMedx Group* 

    WoundGenex announced a strategic partnership w/ MiMedx to launch a premier graft program to wound care providers nationwide. The program provides clinicians access to MiMedx’ industry-leading allograft products through a convenient purchasing option.

  • ConvaTec* 
    Convatec have announced that they have completed the acquisition of Triad Life Sciences Inc. The Triad team, current portfolio and product pipeline will now transition to ConvaTec’s Advanced Wound Care (AWC) business and be known as ConvaTec Advanced Tissue Technologies.

  • NexoBrid* - MediWound*
    MediWound announced an additional $9MM in funding from BARDA in support of NexoBrid’s BLA resubmission and its expanded access treatment protocol (NEXT). BARDA first funded NexoBrid in 2015 to support its development for burn treatment and other casualty events.

Clinical/Regulatory:

  • Avita Medical* 

    Avita Medical announced BARDA modified its contract with the company to support the study of ReCell in soft tissue reconstruction. The company stated ReCell has uses beyond burn care and its trial will help demonstrate value in a broader selection of wounds and tissue damage.

  • Effects of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy in Pts w/ Lymphedema

    A 44-pt trial will evaluate the effects of ESWT added to complex decongestive therapy in pts w/ breast cancer related lymphedema. A primary outcome measurement is the evaluation of pain, and the est study completion date is Jul 15, 2022. clinicaltrials.gov

  • Advanced Medical Solutions*
    A 159-pt PMCF study will collect clinical follow-up data on the AMS ActivHeal Silicone Foam and Silicone Foam Lite dressing, as CE-marking was based on equivalence. The Primary Outcome is wound exudate. It is recruiting, the est study completion is Apr 30, 2022. clinicaltrials.gov

Markets:

  • AbbVie*

    SmartTRAK estimates AbbVie maintained its dominance in Surgical Matrices with +19.3% YoY growth in revenues to $147.5MM and 34.1% share in Q421.

  • Arjo*
    Arjo reported in its 2021 Annual Report that the launch of the SEM Scanner, which helps detect the risk of pressure injuries, is a key component of the company’s new outcome-based program for pressure injury prevention.

  • Tax on Medical Devices in Germany
    The German Medical Technology Association (BVMed) calls for a uniform reduction in sales tax on medical devices to 7%. Currently, there is different taxation depending on the type of product and sometimes even geographical location. BVMed

 Revenues:

  • Sanara MedTech*

    Sanara stated they are planning a Q322 FDA 510k application for its Precision Healing Imager. The company believes having a hyperspectral imager system with its biomarker assay will better assess the wound bed for tx decisions. Q421 and FY21 Earnings Transcript on Seeking Alpha

  • MediWound*

    For 2021, Medacta reported its Extremities business line (including Shoulder and Sportsmed revenue) grew +35.4% CC YoY and +98.5% CC from 2019 to ~$20.8MM (€19.0MM). Medacta 2021 Earnings Release

  • WW Compression Therapy Sees Modest Growth in FY21*
    According to SmartTRAK Financial Dashboard, WW Compression Therapy grew +2.4% in FY21. Q421 was a drag on the year, down -1.1% for the quarter.
