In an interview with SmartTRAK at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), BLT’s Founder and CEO Dr. Nick Hartnell discusses the innovative product his company has developed – an off-the-shelf, biological soft tissue xenograft derived from kangaroo tails.

SmartTRAK: Hi, this is Emily Meng. Today I'm here at AOSSM, and I'm with Nick Hartnell with BLT. Welcome, Nick.

Dr. Nick Hartnell: Thank you. Thank you for having me.

So why don't you tell us a little bit about your background and your product?

NH: Great, thanks. Well, I'm a knee surgeon. I'm from country New South Wales in Australia, and I do lots of soft tissue reconstruction. And when I was doing my surgery, I realized there was this hole in the market, in that we need soft tissue, we need to be able to replace or reconstruct soft tissue with something biological. And the options were taking the graft from that person, or autograft, take an allograft, so from cadavers. But the cadaver tissue is not so strong. It needs to be deep-frozen. And I wanted to come up with something that was off-the-shelf that the surgeon could use whenever they needed it.

So what I've been working on in the last 10 years is getting a product which is off the shelf, which is based on the kangaroo. Now the kangaroo, as you can imagine, is one of the most athletic animals I believe in the world, but certainly in Australia. And the kangaroo, we've proven, has such beautiful soft tissue.
