Recent Studies Announced in Advanced Wound Care

Effects of Electrical Stimulation (ES) on Pressure Ulcers (PUs) 

A Cochrane review assessed the effects of ES on treating PUs. The review concluded that ES probably increases the proportion of PUs healed and the rate of healing but there is uncertainty related to time to complete healing and whether ES decreases wound surface area. Cochrane

A 52-pt RCT evaluated autologous skin cell suspension (ASCS)+compression vs compression alone for the treatment of VLUs. At wk 14, VLUs treated w/ ASCS + compression had a statistically greater decrease in ulcer area vs control (8.94 cm2 versus 1.23 cm2, P = .0143). IWJ

Novel Treatment for DFUs

Aposcience AG will initiate a 132-pt Phase I and Phase II clinical study in Austria to evaluate the efficacy and safety of APO-2 in tx of DFUs w/ the primary outcome for Phase 2 being % wound area reduction at 4 wks. The study is to be completed Nov 2021. clinicaltrials.gov

NPWT with Pectoralis Major Flap

A 167-pt study compared the efficacy of the combination of NPWT w/ monolateral pectoralis muscle flap vs bilateral flap reconstruction in reducing sternal wound infection following sternotomy. The study found mono‐pectoralis group resulted in fewer complications. IWJ

A 98-pt clinical study in underway in Nigeria to evaluate outcomes of post-operative hip and proximal thigh wounds dressed with Post-Op Opsite vs povidone-iodine based dressing. No trial completion date was provided. Contemp Clin Trials CommS
